Sony Ericsson W980 Walkman review: 8 gigs of character

It's no news any more that we've been playing with one of the hotties of the season for some time now. Sony Ericsson W980 made a glorious entrance but we're yet to see about the exit. Set to top the Walkman feature phone lineup, W980 carries along 8 GB worth of storage, a 3 megapixel camera and a built-in accelerometer. The touch-sensitive keys and the latest Sony Ericsson feature phone interface add to the excitement. Still not interested? Then try to think of another music phone with a built-in FM transmitter!

Key features:

  • 2.2" 262K-color TFT LCD display of QVGA resolution
  • 3 megapixel camera
  • 8 gigs of onboard memory
  • FM transmitter
  • Great user interface
  • 3G with HSDPA
  • External 262K-color display with a resolution of 176 x 176 pixels
  • Walkman 3.0 music player
  • Shake control
  • Light effects
  • Touch-sensitive keys
  • Ambient light sensor
  • Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP profile support
  • USB 2.0 connectivity
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Good battery life
  • Comfortable keypad

Main disadvantages:

  • No auto focus nor flash for the camera
  • Inconvenient camera lens location
  • Shiny surface a fingerprint nightmare
  • Display kinda small for a high-end phone
  • Awkward context keys
  • Camera interface not user-friendly
Aiming to meet some high-end demand, Sony Ericsson W980 brings the cream of the music centered niceties of the house. The clamshell form factor and the quite eccentric features such as FM transmitter and light effects make it hard to point a finger at its main market rivals.

One suspect that comes to mind is Samsung G400 Soul. Featuring the same flip-up bodywork, it trades the FM transmitter and the large storage space for a 5 megapixel camera. You figure if it's a square deal or else. If the G400 Soul has some of those good Samsung audio quality genes, it's in for a match with Sony Ericsson W980. With no information about the cost of either at this stage, the two devices might actually end up running in different lanes pricewise.
Anyway, we think the odds with W980 are towards a hefty price tag, which opens the door to some serious smartphone competition.
Now, one last thing before we get to the point. We should warn you that ours is a pre-release unit, so some minor changes are likely before D-day. Our units was rock solid and gave us no problems at all. So, significant changes to the overall user experience are quite unlikely.

Sony Ericsson G502 review: Web as you go

The newest member of the Sony Ericsson G-lineup was only announced a few weeks ago with a stark commitment to deliver great internet experience. We were more than curious to find if it delivers on the promise to introduce a much larger audience to the niceties of good mobile internet. Compact and stylish, this bar has the looks and our preview has already lifted a corner of the curtain on performance. Join us as we start our answer-to-all-your-questions Sony Ericsson G502 review.

Sony Ericsson G502 Sony Ericsson G502 Sony Ericsson G502 Sony Ericsson G502
Sony Ericsson G502 official photos

Key features

  • 2" 262K-color TFT LCD display of QVGA resolution
  • GPRS, EDGE and 3G connectivity with HSDPA
  • Great web browser
  • Great battery life
  • Compact size
  • M2 memory card slot
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • Media center
  • Comfortable keypad
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP support
  • USB connectivity

Main disadvantages

  • Poor display legibility under direct sunlight
  • No video-call camera
  • No document reader
  • D-pad takes some time getting used to
The market, at which Sony Ericsson G502 is aiming, is not really overcrowded. There are only a handful of budget handsets to feature HSDPA and at least decent browser capabilities. The strongest challenger is probably the Sony Ericsson K660 but it will probably be a bit more expensive due to the few extra features it offers. Whether the dedicated browser keys are worth the extra cash is debatable but, as these are internet-centered devices, they might just make a difference.

Motorola RAZR maxx V6 is also a reasonably priced HSDPA-enabled handset that comes with the Opera web browser. This might just be enough for some people to choose it over the G502. The form factor could also be decisive here as the maxx V6 is a flip.
The slider Samsung F330 may appeal to the music-lovers, as it features some dedicated music keys to compliment the HSDPA. Some people might prefer the sliding design to the Sony Ericsson G502 bar. We for one do happen to like the G502 browser and general interface more.
So, the few alternatives aside, let's cut to the actual reviewing of Sony Ericsson G502. You should keep in mind that despite being very close to retail version, ours is still a beta unit, so some minor improvements and bug fixes in the software department are not to be ruled out completely.

Sony Ericsson R306 Radio review: Stay tuned

Sony Ericsson R306 Radio is quite unusually set to revolve around one single thing - listening to radio on-the-go. Its built-in radio tuner works in both FM and AM. The lower midrange R306 Radio delivers on other fronts too - it packs a 1.3 megapixel camera plus Bluetooth and USB connectivity. It's compact enough but also offers two surprisingly capable stereo speakers. How's that for a flashback to the time when family life revolved around the radio. The dedicated external radio keys complete the feature set of that nifty little fella. You are welcome to tune in and see what it's like to spend some time with it.

Key features

  • FM/AM radio tuner with RDS and TrackID
  • AM tuner has two modes: 9 kHz (Americas and Japan) and 10 kHz (the rest)
  • Dedicated external radio controls
  • Tri-band GSM support
  • 1.9" 65K-color TFT display of a 128 x 160 pixel resolution
  • Secondary monochrome external display of a 96 x 32 pixel resolution
  • 1.3 megapixel camera
  • 5MB of internal memory
  • Bluetooth
  • USB
  • Radio broadcasts recorder in MP3 format
  • Stereo speakers
  • Optimized design for desktop placing

Main disadvantages

  • External display has low daylight legibility due to the mirror finish
  • Radio is not that usable without the headset plugged in
  • Standard headset jack is huge
  • RDS readings not shown on external display
  • Stores 20 stations only for AM and FM bands combined
  • TrackID doesn't work with the radio
Announced in January 2008, Sony Ericsson R306 Radio is among the first handsets to drive heavily on the built-in radio tuner that is usually just an extra feature in most other handsets. When closed, the R306 certainly looks the part with dedicated radio keys and vintage radio looks. The Sony Ericsson R306 Radio is also unique for offering an AM radio tuner.

Anyway, the R306 Radio is a lower midrange handset and all specifications match that tag. We won't be expecting miracles from it, but by the sound of it (pun intended), we think that it just might deserve some attention.
So, tune in to our show as we explore the Sony Ericsson R306 Radio right after this jump.

Sony Ericsson W980 preview: First look

Sony Ericsson W980 is among those gadgets with enough class and guts to hope for a long run in the spotlight. A Walkman-series phone, armed with 8GB of internal memory, 3 megapixel camera and a built-in accelerometer simply cannot go unnoticed. Now, add the exotic FM transmitter feature and the light effects and you can feel the tingle of excitement of having a real star in your hands.

You can bet that we are already working on a full-blown review of the sleek clamshell but before it's ready to serve, here is a quick taster of our first impressions. It should give you the first idea of what the Sony Ericsson W980 is good for.
For starters, check out some photos of the newest addition to the Walkman family. It looks all set to become the flagship of the Sony Ericsson music feature-phone portfolio and has some pretty high expectations to match. The question is whether Sony Ericsson W980 is capable of going that extra step towards stardom.

Sony Ericsson Kurara Review

The Sony Ericsson Kurara has been in the news of late. While the Android based X10 has been in the limelight since the past few weeks, the features of the Kurara ensured that the device is not ignored at all.

New leaked images of what is told to be of the Kurara have been spotted by folks over at Phones.db. As known earlier, the Kurara will be the second Series 60 based phone after the Satio that was launched just a few weeks ago. As best we can tell, the Kurara is an S60-running smartphone with an 8.1 MP camera, like the Rachel.

The interesting facet about the Kurara in this iteration of the leaked images is the HD inscription at the rear of the device. This has led to speculations that the phone will be able to record and playback HD videos. Currently, only the Omnia HD from Samsung (another S60 device) is capable of doing this. Unlike the Rachel, the Kurara's camera is supposed to be able to record in 720p HD. Owing to the multimedia prowess, it might be added to the Entertainment Unlimited range of phones that currently lists the Aino and the Satio.

The Kurara is also rumored to pack an 3.5-inch AMOLED screen, although that's impossible to confirm with the photos we have. Sony Ericsson Kurara is expected to be launched first half of 2010.

Sony Ericsson Jalou Review

Sony Ericsson today officially launched their new Sony Ericssn Jalou Dolce & Gabbana edition phone, with a new campaign to highlight the phone's fashion sensibilities. By itself, the S/E Jalou isn't much to look at. It's a very small flip phone, only 73mm long, which Sony Ericsson helpfully points out is probably shorter than your favorite lipstick. The 3G-enabled flip phone gets a fairly average assortment of modern features, including a 3.2-megapixel camera with geo tagging, but no auto focus function. Perhaps Sony Ericsson thinks you'll prefer your home fashion shoot a little blurry? The Jalou also sports an FM radio, and the phone will be able to synchronize with an Exchange ActiveSync account, a surprisingly business-like feature for this fashionable little device.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X3 Review

Japanese -Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson has been rumored quite a few times before to plan on launching on the market an XPERIA model that would run under Google's Android operating system, the XPERIA X3 Rachael handset, and it seems that we're getting closer and closer each day to the official announcement of the device.

SEMCblog is reporting that the handset vendor will officially announce the availability of XPERIA X3 next month, most probably at the beginning of November, it seems, and that all the goodies that have been previously rumored to come with the phone will be there, including the Android 2.0 flavor of the OS, and the Qualcomm 1Ghz Snapdragon processor (it will be the second Android device to include the chipset, following the recently announced Acer Liquid smartphone).

“So-welcome announcement from Sony Ericsson will be in early November. It will be announcement of great smartphone which has harmonious codename Rachael. As you may know, Sony Ericsson Rachael is Android-based device which has 4.0″ WVGA touchscreen. The device has chipset Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon 1 GHz. And, of course, Rachael has a 8.1 megapixel camera with auto focus, 3.5 mm audio jack and standard micro-USB connector. Sony Ericsson Rachael will be available in two beautiful colours: Sensuous Black and Luster White,” the blog notes.

No details on the exact availability of the phone emerged, yet one might already remember that the Android-powered Sony Ericsson XPERIA X3 was said to hit the market sometime in January 2010. The phone has been already reported to come with its own user interface thrown over Google's platform, so one should expect for an interesting user experience to come along with this device. Considering the specification list of the handset, this enhanced experience is something guaranteed, though we're also certain that it won't come cheap. Hopefully, this will pan out and we'll be able to learn more info on the device, so stick around for the details.
